Narrative:

Original departure clearance specified kennedy three departure (runway heading climb to 5000'). I operated the radios until we were taxied into position on runway 22R. I assumed control of the radios after we had stopped. Approximately one min after an heavy transport was airborne from runway 22R, we were cleared for takeoff, acknowledged by captain, with a new heading of 'left to 180 degree and climb to 2000''. Neither the captain nor myself heard the amended altitude and the captain replied to the new instructions with 'left to 180 degree after takeoff'. He did not acknowledge the new altitude assignment. A traffic conflict apparently occurred between us and the heavy transport which departed runway 22R ahead of us; it was flying easterly. We were politely asked to call a phone number given to us by departure. Captain called several times and we learned the tapes revealed we had not acknowledged the amended altitude so no action would be taken against us.
