Narrative:
Flying from pit to iad, cleared the armel 1 STAR. First time into iad. During takeoff and climb manual slid closed. When I reopened it I was turned to the armel 1 STAR into dca. Didn't realize I was flying the incorrect STAR until cleared to cross the mumsy fix at 11000'. After returning the navigation's and getting my head out of my butt, I started down at maximum airspeed--4000-6000 FPM. Dulles approach queried us as to whether we could make the restriction, and realizing we would be close at best, gave us a vector of the STAR. Easy trap to fall into with both dca and iad having co-named stars. Supplemental information from acn 99713: suggestion: although the NOTAMS state that the arrs will be renamed, I suggest a more timely change of the 2 arrs be made.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALT CROSSING RESTRICTION MISSED AT MUMSY INTERSECTION.
Narrative: FLYING FROM PIT TO IAD, CLRED THE ARMEL 1 STAR. FIRST TIME INTO IAD. DURING TKOF AND CLB MANUAL SLID CLOSED. WHEN I REOPENED IT I WAS TURNED TO THE ARMEL 1 STAR INTO DCA. DIDN'T REALIZE I WAS FLYING THE INCORRECT STAR UNTIL CLRED TO CROSS THE MUMSY FIX AT 11000'. AFTER RETURNING THE NAV'S AND GETTING MY HEAD OUT OF MY BUTT, I STARTED DOWN AT MAX AIRSPD--4000-6000 FPM. DULLES APCH QUERIED US AS TO WHETHER WE COULD MAKE THE RESTRICTION, AND REALIZING WE WOULD BE CLOSE AT BEST, GAVE US A VECTOR OF THE STAR. EASY TRAP TO FALL INTO WITH BOTH DCA AND IAD HAVING CO-NAMED STARS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 99713: SUGGESTION: ALTHOUGH THE NOTAMS STATE THAT THE ARRS WILL BE RENAMED, I SUGGEST A MORE TIMELY CHANGE OF THE 2 ARRS BE MADE.
