Narrative:
B777; aircraft X; door R-4 window; I believe; had the outer pane installed upside down. This is indicated by the part number on the pane being at the bottom of the window. Maintenance manual (MM) 56-31-01-X doesn't address this condition; only that the vent hole on the middle pane is to be positioned at the bottom. However; cabin window requirements; found in MM 56-21-01-X; clearly states the part numbers on the outer pane are to be situated at the top; as well as the vent hole on the bottom for the middle pane. I suspect this verbiage may accidentally be omitted from the door window replacement in MM 56-31-01-X. If I'm correct; then MM 56-31-01-X needs to be revised to indicate outer panes have a top and bottom. Also; aircraft X must be scheduled for a R-4 door window realignment.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A Line Mechanic reports that cabin window requirements in Maintenance Manual (M/M) 56-21-01 clearly state that part numbers on B777 outer window panes are to be situated at the top position of the window. However; passenger door window replacement language in MM 56-31-01 only references the vent hole for the middle pane of the door window.
