Narrative:

Complete autopilot failure at 500 ft shortly after selection of the autopilot flying an RNAV departure. Aircraft initiated a sharp right turn; immediate action was taken by hand flying the aircraft back to course to avoid a possible RNAV deviation. ATC was notified of the discrepancy; after a few minutes the autopilot finally did engaged and we decided to continue as we could comply with ATC and rvsm procedures to destination.
