Narrative:

A B737-800 aircraft returned to the gate with a right engine oil clog light. I was assigned to assist another mechanic. According to the [boeing] fault isolation manual (fim) the scavenge oil filter was to be removed and inspected for debris. B737 aircraft illustrated parts catalog (ipc) 79-21-04-01 showed the scavenge oil filter element as item # 30. This part was never purchased and consequently not in the [company inventory] system. I conferred with maintenance control and they provided me with a company part number (cpn) as the filter element used on company B737 fleet. A search of this cpn shows up in ipc 79-21-04-01 as item # -27. The 'dash' in front of the item number denotes it's not shown in the ipc reference. It's impossible to derive the cpn for the scavenge oil filter element solely using the ipc.
