Narrative:

Upon entering hold at farmm intersection first officer called traffic, the small aircraft seemed to be emerging or coming into view from the scattered cumulus clouds directly ahead. Upon sighting the small aircraft I immediately initiated a turn back to the right and climbed about 200' to avoid the impending collision. We passed close behind the small aircraft and a little above him. 'Chicago' told us that the traffic had just popped up and he was indicating an altitude of 9900'.
