Narrative:

Our IFR clearance received at the gate specified heading 270 degrees, maintain 4000'. After taxiing to runway 23, we were held in position while a single engine small aircraft took off on runway 33. At the time we were cleared for takeoff we were assigned to fly runway heading. At 800' AGL, as I reduced aircraft pitch angle to retract flaps, I saw a blue and white single engine small aircraft slightly above and very close. I leveled off to avoid the other aircraft. The captain questioned the tower controller as to his awareness of the small aircraft. His reply was, 'I was watching both of you.' at no time were we advised of the small aircraft's proximity or potential conflict. Possibly the small aircraft was in the VFR pattern for runway 33.

AT NO TIME WERE WE ADVISED OF THE SMA'S PROX OR POTENTIAL CONFLICT. POSSIBLY THE SMA WAS IN THE VFR PATTERN FOR RWY 33.
