Narrative:

The first officer was flying. With a clearance to descend to 11000'. He started out of 24000 using the vertical speed mode. We were descending at about 500 FPM. Center asked us to slow to 280 (were at 320). The first officer switched to IAS (airspeed) mode and rolled the thumb wheel back to 280 KIAS. The aircraft climbed to 24500' before reaching 280 KIAS and beginning to descend. I turned off the mode C at 24300 and back on after descending below 24000'. The first officer had about 350 hours in type and had been doing a super job. He just didn't understand what the aircraft would do after the mode switch.
