Received departure instructions of left to 260 degree, maintain 3000 from mdw, runway 31. Contacted departure and received clearance back to 290 degree climb to 4000'. At XA44 received clearance to turn left to 270 and climb to 7000'. Read back same. At XA45 departure controller said my altitude readout was '6700' maintain 6000.' I stated we'd been cleared to 7000 and read back same. Returned to 6000'. Recommend specific arrival and departure corridors for midway and O'hare be established so that pilots know exactly what to expect and controller workload is reduced and standardized.
