Narrative:

Seventy miles east of ZZZ we noticed a smell in cockpit [and] asked the flight attendants if something was burning in the oven and they said no. They then noticed a smell in front part of cabin and the smell increased in intensity. We donned the oxygen masks; got out the smoke goggles; and ran smoke removal checklist. We declared an emergency with ATC and diverted to ZZZ. Center gave us immediately direct and lower. Approach gave us a 17 mile downwind; while we requested direct to the outer marker. We requested the outer marker 3 times and got standby or a frequency change. After arriving safely at the gate and working with maintenance; we noticed that the fwd eqpt (forward equipment) cooling fan 1 circuit breaker was popped; along with equipment cooling low flow circuit breaker.
