Narrative:
A BE30 departed teb and level at 13;00 ft. A citation mustang departed dxr that I climbed to 12;000 initially. Both aircraft were on same course flying direct merit intersection. I waited until the jet was more than 3 miles in front of the BE30; in fact I measured 3.06 miles before I climbed jet to 16;000 through the altitude of the BE30. I remember commenting to controller next to me that I wasted 0.06 miles of airspace. While calling traffic to the BE30; the pilot stated that he could maintain visual separation. My response was thanks but it's not needed. The ground speed of the C510 was 10-20 KTS faster than the BE30. Recommendation; next time I'll give myself a little more cushion factor.

Title: N90 Controller described a loss of separation event when attempting to climb a jet in front of a propeller aircraft but misjudging the distance required to secure RADAR separation.
