Narrative:

ATC cleared to climb and maintain 17000'. Cleared direct lake henry. Copilot flying. Overshot 17000' by 600' (17600'). Immediately recognized by both pilots and aircraft immediately and abruptly returned to level 17000'. No call or mention by ATC. I did not call 1000' prior to level off altitude or 17000' as I was searching 7/8 us (hi) chart for lake henry. I must place considerable blame for this mistake with commercial chart and the terrible presentation of information on the us (hi) 7/8 in the northeast us the chart is a great distraction in daylight and a menace to safe flight at night.
