Narrative:

Was cleared to cross 40 NM west of VOR at FL240. Programed FMS for crossing; and also programed expected crossing of intersection at FL110. Was then given direct to the intersection. I then went back to vto page and didn't see that the FMS dumped the crossing restriction at the intersection. Unknown to me; I was using the crossing of 2;300 ft at another intersection on the ILS to the runway instead. Cause FMS limitations. Failure of FAA to require training (and that is not checking; but training. Training that is without stress of failure and losing your job). Install VNAV coupled autopilot. Update FMS so as not to dump crossing restriction after executing a direct to.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: EMB145 Captain reports missing a crossing restriction during descent due to FMS design limitations that dump a crossing restriction whenever a direct to function is selected. The reporter believes that inadequate training is part of the problem.
