Narrative:

We were given instructions to taxi to runway 33. En route to runway 33; we crossed what appeared to be and were identified by signage as the '33 approach' bars. Not seeing any runway hold short signage ahead of us; we stopped and queried ATC who advised that the area we had crossed was the hold short for runway 33. The signage is completely ambiguous and only identifies the area as the '33 approach'. After the 33 approach hold short line; the taxiway continues for a distance; enters the alignment of the runway and continues up to the displaced threshold with no further signage. ATC seemed unconcerned and simply asked that we hold short at our present position which was well clear of the runway alignment. It would be ideal for the signage to show as the runway hold short at the location that is currently shown as '33 approach'. In addition the runway 33 approach hold short lines should be painted so they are clearly visible as they are virtually non existent due to faded paint and weeds coming through the taxiway surface.

Title: A CE 560 flight crew failed to hold short of Runway 33 at DET. Cite the lack of a sign indicating the runway bars over which they taxied enroute to the runway were; in fact; hold short lines for Runway 33. The crew was also dismayed at the deteriorated state of the hold short markings.
