Narrative:

During the preflight checklist the captain was reading the ACARS to me (the first officer and pilot flying). He said flaps 5 for runway 28R. I corrected him and said we would use runway 1R. Captain confused the runway 28R and runway 1R data. Captain said runway 1R would be flaps 5 derate of 20 - should have been full power flaps 20. Takeoff was smooth and uneventful. The error was caught after takeoff. ACARS printout is easily misread. It is very compact and the letter 'D' could mean 'dry' or 'derate'. 20 could mean flaps 20 or derate 20. ACARS should be more clearly delineated.
