Narrative:
Two mistakes were made. First; I thought I knew this area well enough that I could simply fly a visual and enter into a 45 degree into the pattern to get gas at corona airport. I did not see the airport until I was on top of it and I didn't adjust my altitude; remaining at pattern altitude of 1500 feet. There was another aircraft in the pattern and we both took evasive action. I did not get that aircraft's nor pilot's information although I did speak with them on the ground. The second error I made was after overflying the airport I continued with a right landing pattern and landed. This is a left traffic pattern airport. I understand both mistakes and this has been corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A general aviation pilot reported an NMAC with another light aircraft at AJO; admitting that he lacked situational awareness and flew the wrong pattern.
