Narrative:

I was the captain in charge during the assignment. I was informed a few days after the assignment ended that we had flown without life vests on board. Apparently maintenance had removed them and not replaced them and approved the plane for flight. I did not notice this fact during my interior preflights on any of the days involved. The interior preflight checklist does not list the life vests as an item to be checked. This is a 'gotcha' that should be corrected by adding 'life vests' to the interior preflight checklist. There should also be a mechanism added to the maintenance procedures that doesn't allow the plane to be released after critical equipment has been removed. On a personal level; this one will be added to my personal checklist to never happen again.
