Narrative:

Shortly after normal takeoff we were told to level at 8000 ft for traffic. After traffic conflict was clear we were recleared to 21000 ft. Somewhere between 8-9000 ft; we got a oil filter bypass light. MSA for that area was around 11000 ft so while captain started looking at the QRH; I kept the aircraft climbing to 12000 for obstacle clearance. We declared an emergency and started a turn back to the airport. Followed qrc procedures for oil filter bypass light; which eventually had us shut down the #1 engine. Made a normal single engine approach to runway.
