Narrative:

Upon being parked at the gate I followed the shut down checklist flow to shut down the number one engine. At this point I must not have reached over to pull the number 2 engine to the shut off position. After all passengers had deplaned the first officer said he would walk around and I shut down the APU and powered down the aircraft while leaving the number 2 engine running. According to the chief pilot; a mechanic walking past the aircraft noticed the engine still running and no crew. He went up to the cockpit and secured the engine. In todays environment of trying to save gas; and the company procedures we have set up to connect ground power when available; I have gotten in the habit of shutting down number 1 first and then waiting for ground power to be connected before shutting number 2 down and completing the shutdown checklist. In this case I believe that after reaching the gate and shutting down number 1; I looked and saw that no ground power was connected and out of habit left number 2 running while waiting for ramp personnel to connect ground power. Being that we were getting off duty and trying to make the next bus I began to pack my bags and prepared to get off the aircraft. Usually by this point ground power would have been connected and triggered me to complete the shut down checklist. However; being that I was coming off a nap and feeling somewhat fatigued I failed to come back and finish the checklist. Seeing no crew to take over the aircraft and the first officer saying he was going to walk around; I shut down the APU and aircraft without following proper procedures and checklist. As I stepped off the aircraft and onto the boarding bridge I saw the crew bus coming around the end of the concourse and hurried off to catch the bus without looking back at aircraft. The bottom line is I rushed myself to make sure I did not miss the bus and failed to properly follow checklists and procedures. I understand the safety issue I have caused and am very upset with myself for allowing this to happen. I have learned the hard way that no matter what time constraints I put upon myself; I must follow and complete all checklists.
