Narrative:

At about 11;000 feet during the climbout I observed 'left gen off' EICAS. We accomplished the QRH procedure; recovered the generator for about 2 minutes before it failed again. Started the APU and initiated VHF phone patch to dispatch and maintenance control who advised that a return to the departure airport would be prudent. Coordinated return with center; and requested holding while we considered our overweight condition. Weighed approximately 341;000 pounds at this point; none of which was available for dumping as the center fuel tank was already empty. During the hold; reviewed QRH overweight landing procedure and fom 'overweight landing' policy. During this time received ACARS from chief pilot advising that overweight landing is permissible per fom; whereupon the captain elected to discontinue holding and proceed to the airport. Requested landing on longer runway; and weight at landing was 335;100 pounds. Minimal braking was applied and we easily made the turnoff at taxiway aa. The air turn back was necessary due to loss of a generator when continuing could not provide for an equivalent level of safety as returning to the departure airport. Overweight landing accomplished after reviewing company guidance on safely accomplishing same.

Title: A B767-300's generator failed during climb after takeoff. The APU was started and after talking with the company the aircraft returned to the departure airport for an overweight landing.
