Narrative:

Approaching the half waypoint of our pacific crossing I detected a very acrid smell. I put on my oxygen mask as the cockpit started to take on smoke. The captain was notified and quickly came to the flight deck and assumed control from the other relief pilot. I continued to fly as the second relief pilot. All of us noted the visible smoke and strong smell. We finally got a status message revealing we had an ee compartment fan inoperative. We placed a satcom call to maintenance for assistance. They noted the same indication and verified the symptoms as indicated. As the smoke and smell dissipated; the other relief pilot went into the ee compartment and pulled the affected circuit breaker. We monitored the situation as we continued toward our closest suitable alternate. With no other indications of a problem and the smoke and or fumes no longer detectable. We proceeded to destination for an uneventful landing.
