Narrative:

We departed sjc on runway 30R; on the LOUPE1 SID. Takeoff and initial climb out were normal with LNAV engaged and the turn commenced at 1.8 NM DME sjc VOR as depicted. Through the turn over a residential area northeast of the airport at approximately 4200 ft MSL and turning through a heading of 090; the aircraft was directly illuminated by a ground based green laser for approximately 5-8 seconds. The laser tracked the aircraft in the cockpit area during the event. Norcal TRACON was advised of the illumination and location immediately and the controller issued an unauthorized laser statement on the frequency. We continued the flight uneventfully to our destination. Upon arrival; I contacted the sjc tower by phone to see if they needed precise location information for their report. He stated they had not been informed of the event by norcal TRACON.
