Narrative:
This was day 2 of my IOE on the B757. At cruise at FL300 IMC the check airman was taking a bathroom break before we started our descent. I received a yellow traffic advisory at my one o'clock position low showing six hundred feet below us; seconds later followed a red resolution advisory. I immediately turned off the autopilot and followed the GPWS commands of 'climb; climb' then 'monitor vertical speed'. I climbed to 30;400 ft until I got the clear of conflict; then I descended back to FL300. I advised center I was responding to an RA. I could hear the traffic below me also telling center the he was doing the same. Center acknowledged and asked if I was descending back down to FL300; I responded as roger; then things got real quiet for a few seconds. I estimated we came within 250 to 300 ft of each other.
