Narrative:

On takeoff roll; another air carrier at the hold short line reported large flame behind #2 engine. They later described large smoke plume from same; as did passengers. No abnormal indications in the cockpit. Take-off was aborted above 80 KTS but below V1. Engine was secured. No extinguishing agent was used. Arff was requested for check of engine and brakes on the runway with no problems noted. Aircraft was towed back to gate with arff following. No additional problems.

Title: B737 Flight Crew is informed of large smoke plume and flame behind number two engine during takeoff roll. Takeoff is rejected and engine shut down; followed by a tow to the gate.

ARFF was requested for check of engine and brakes on the runway with no problems noted. Aircraft was towed back to gate with ARFF following. No additional problems.
