Narrative:

Clearance was: TEB6 neion as filed. ATIS for teb was: 240/11/G19 10SM 50BKN 18/7 2960 departure runway 24. The SID states to climb to 1500 ft; heading 240 degrees then turn right 280 degrees. At 4.5 DME from teb; climb to and maintain 2000 ft. On departure after reaching 1500 ft and on a heading of 280 degrees; I climbed to the maintain altitude of 2000 ft. The teb departure ATC controller noted the climb and asked us if we had 'read the SID.' no further comments were made. We climbed approximately 1.3 NM too soon. After reviewing the SID it was apparent to me I focused on the bold maintain 2000 ft; and slipped on the 1500 ft to 4.5 DME. In the future I would put 1500 ft in the altitude alerter. The SID could be improved by: 'climb and maintain 1500 ft until the 4.5 DME of teb.'
