Narrative:

We were originally issued the Marica1 departure/botom transition which put us in the right direction; then after push back there was some confusion on ground. Controller issued us the Adelia2 departure which does not put us in the correct direction (west). We were told after takeoff that there would be vectors. We departed off of runway 10; and were told to turn to the mrc VOR; then after mrc right turn direct botom intersection. Less than a minute later the controller tells us to fly to nite intersection with no further instructions. Four miles prior to nite the captain asks ATC what they want us to do. There was a hesitation on the part of the ATC; he then told us right turn direct botom. The next 15 minutes of flight went without a problem...until we were talking to sbgr approach. We were advised that we were in radar contact. We were on the usaba arrival to land runway 09L in sbgr. Everything was going well until just prior to love intersection. We were descending to FL120 direct love. We were are told to descend to FL070; fly heading of 030 for 4 minutes; then turn left to a heading of 330. Next we were told to fly a heading of 330 for 2 min; then left turn 290; all the while we were being stepped down. We continued descending while flying these timed heading. Eventually we got to the localizer and flew the rest of that approach without incident. What happened that night was completely un-called for. We were being stepped down in a dangerous area; while being taken off of the safe haven airway. There is no excuse for what happened. The lack of professionalism; coupled with the lack of SOP on their part; with the lack of decent english skills is dangerous. This event must be looked into and addressed; or eventually we will put one into the side of a mountain.
