Narrative:

I was taxiing my aircraft from the south ramp to the north 'inter island' ramp to position it for receiving cargo. It is customary late at night to use the tower frequency for everything since there is only one guy in the tower; so I called tower for taxi; and was given clearance to 'taxi across 4R and 4L via echo; hold short of 8L at echo.' I read it back and began to taxi. As I crossed 4R I looked towards the approach and saw an airplane on what looked like about a one mile final for 8L. As I continued; tower called me back and said '... Turn left there at bravo and taxi to golf; hold short of 8L at golf.' I read this back and shifted my attention back to looking for the turn onto bravo taxiway. I saw the blue lines ahead to my left and slowed as I approached what I thought was bravo taxiway. I looked left and saw a very large airplane; with all its lights on; coming towards me on bravo. I braked hard to a full stop and began to look at where I was. I had missed the turn onto bravo taxiway and had continued past the hold short line at runway 8L. The airplane I saw coming towards me was a large transport on the landing rollout on runway 8L. His right wing tip passed maybe twenty feet from my windshield. Upon reviewing the circumstances; I believe that two things led up to this; the tower controller's failure to turn me in time and my own failure to maintain awareness of my position on the airport. I think that by the time the tower had cleared me to turn left onto bravo I was already past bravo; and assumed that the intersection I was approaching was bravo. I did not scan for any other signs except the blue lights. Adding to my own confusion was probably too fast a taxi speed. There are two things I believe I can do to prevent this in the future: I will maintain a slow deliberate taxi speed; and I will maintain a higher awareness of my position on the airport.
