Narrative:

I was involved in a damage incident involving a saab sf-340 aircraft at ZZZ airport. After backing aircraft from the gate to take it to the maintenance hangar; I had difficulty keeping the parking brake set; having to reset it several times with the override pump. After starting the left engine; I turned left on quebec and after taxiing; I believe more than a plane length; I was losing steering and braking control and turning to the left; into the grass infield. I began to power down the engines; to the best of my memory; at the light poles. We ran over taxi marking signs on the left side of the aircraft and damaged the left engine propeller. We came to a stop in the grass 30 to 40 feet from the signs and engines were at a full stop. I believe the reason for the steering and breaking loss was because I did not set the aircraft generators after starting. I don't remember not doing that; but I believe that is the probable cause for this incident.
