Narrative:

During engine start; ramp agent reported sparks coming from the bottom of the #1 engine cowling. We had just achieved 40% N1 on the start when this was reported. We accomplished the engine torching QRH and shut down the engine. Notified maintenance control; dispatch; and management after visually verifying no fire was occurring. After talking to the ramp agent; he informed us that the sparks were coming from the engine cowling heat exhaust vent. Maintenance control sent starter and contract maintenance installed per instructions. We started engine after this process completed with no other issues.
