Boston center assigned us to descend from 16000 to 10000. We responded and descended. Then we were transferred to boston center 139.30. He told us to maintain 16000. We told him that the previous controller assigned us to 10000. At 15500; boston told us that we were supposed to be at 16000 and that another company aircraft was assigned 10000. We initiated a climb back to 16000 and then boston told us to descend to 10000.

Title: Air carrier with ZBW was issued conflicting descent altitude assignments from two successive controllers while on descent for EWR.

Narrative: Boston center assigned us to descend from 16000 to 10000. We responded and descended. Then we were transferred to Boston Center 139.30. He told us to maintain 16000.
