Narrative:

We had the airport in sight and were cleared pilots discretion to 4000 ft. Seconds later approach told us to level off at 5000 ft. At that moment we saw the traffic on TCAS at the same alt head on to our 11 o'clock. We received a RA and complied with the RA. 3;000 ft climb. When we cleared the conflict; we told approach we had an RA and he quickly handed us off to tower. The cause was a lack of situational awareness.
