Narrative:

We were climbing out when we got a gen off light on the EICAS; followed subsequently by a gen drive light on. We had a previous instance of this on the ground and returned to the gate before this flight. The airplane was repaired and returned to service and we took off with no issues until we got the same lights again. We elected to return to our departure airport and declared an emergency. We notified dispatch we were returning and sent a message to the station. We landed uneventfully overweight at 218;000 pounds. We did not need emergency services.
