Narrative:

After a normal landing on runway 36, we asked 3 times for a turnoff down runway 33. This is a standard procedure because it expedites the taxi back to the terminal. The controller was busy and did not answer. After checking for traffic, we proceeded down runway 33, and clrd all runways without incident. When I finally did contact the local controller, he scolded us for turning down runway 33 without his approval. In the future, I recommend that special turnoff approvals be obtained prior to touchdown. If no clearance is received, plan to use an approved taxiway or roll to the end.
