Narrative:
Aircraft X reported a loose knob on the P5-13 electrical meter; battery and galley power overhead module. Troubleshooting revealed a bad selector switch. Maintenance procedures replacement part stock item was not available in stores. A stores ipc inquiry showed an alternate stock item. This is the part I installed thinking it was an effective part. The stores ipc inquiry is misleading; showing an alternate part number. Maintenance procedures will not show effectivity for the alternate part number. In review; stock item is not effective for aircraft X but stock item is an alternate part number for stock item. I did not check maintenance procedures on the alternate stock item number assuming stores ipc alternate stock item was correct.
