Narrative:
The SID required a 1500 ft climb until 4.5 DME prior to climbing to 2000 ft. Acting as non flying pilot; I should have monitored the flying pilot's actions closer. We were at 2000 ft prior to the 4.5 DME point. To prevent in future: confirm the VNAV along with navigation functions are in fact 'armed.'supplemental info from acn 825619: the cause: becoming focused on initiating the turn at 1500 ft and not exceeding the 2000 ft altitude limit; not keeping in mind the 4.5 DME. Also; believing I had selected navigation/VNAV; when I had selected navigation only.
