Narrative:

We departed dfw as commuter X. We departed runway 31L with a departure heading assigned 240 degrees and altitude assigned 2000'. Upon reaching 2000' and 240 degrees the climb checklist was completed. ATC cleared us to climb to 3000'. During the climb the captain (PNF) called company dispatch with our out and off times. While the captain was off ATC frequency, ATC advised us of a VFR corp Y at 10 O'clock, 4000', descending for ftw. I advised looking for the traffic. ATC then advised us to turn left 170 degrees, maintain 3000'. At that time I saw aircraft Y on a slightly converging course descending through our altitude. I proceeded to turn to the assigned heading of 170 degrees which would turn our aircraft into Y's flight path, but clearing aircraft Y by a safe margin. At this time the captain looked up, saw aircraft Y, and proceeded to turn the aircraft back to the original heading, bringing us that much closer to Y. If ATC instructions had been followed we would have passed well off aircraft Y's tail. Horizontal distance was 300-500'. No other comments were made on the frequency 120.5.

Title: LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION AND NMAC BETWEEN COMMUTER AND CORPORATE ACFT. PLT DEVIATION.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED DFW AS COMMUTER X. WE DEPARTED RWY 31L WITH A DEP HDG ASSIGNED 240 DEGS AND ALT ASSIGNED 2000'. UPON REACHING 2000' AND 240 DEGS THE CLB CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED. ATC CLRED US TO CLB TO 3000'. DURING THE CLB THE CAPT (PNF) CALLED COMPANY DISPATCH WITH OUR OUT AND OFF TIMES. WHILE THE CAPT WAS OFF ATC FREQ, ATC ADVISED US OF A VFR CORP Y AT 10 O'CLOCK, 4000', DSNDING FOR FTW. I ADVISED LOOKING FOR THE TFC. ATC THEN ADVISED US TO TURN LEFT 170 DEGS, MAINTAIN 3000'. AT THAT TIME I SAW ACFT Y ON A SLIGHTLY CONVERGING COURSE DSNDING THROUGH OUR ALT. I PROCEEDED TO TURN TO THE ASSIGNED HDG OF 170 DEGS WHICH WOULD TURN OUR ACFT INTO Y'S FLT PATH, BUT CLRING ACFT Y BY A SAFE MARGIN. AT THIS TIME THE CAPT LOOKED UP, SAW ACFT Y, AND PROCEEDED TO TURN THE ACFT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL HDG, BRINGING US THAT MUCH CLOSER TO Y. IF ATC INSTRUCTIONS HAD BEEN FOLLOWED WE WOULD HAVE PASSED WELL OFF ACFT Y'S TAIL. HORIZ DISTANCE WAS 300-500'. NO OTHER COMMENTS WERE MADE ON THE FREQ 120.5.
