Narrative:
On departure from apf we were given vectors to hilti. These vectors were straight out over the ocean and I was concerned about the 50 miles limit from shore we are restricted to. I requested a different route. After given that new route that was over land; I was told to call ZMA upon arrival to destination ZZZ. Thought I may have done something wrong; but talking to center on telephone; we were able to clear everything up. I was told that center is aware of the 50 miles limit and we would never have gotten there. Looking back; I should have clarified my concern with ground control before taxi. Now I know.

Title: A light transport jet pilot departed APF on a vector toward HILTI intersection but requested a vector that would keep the aircraft closer to land. ATC requested a phone call after landing to hear the pilot's reason for the request.
