Narrative:

Northbound on UA632; tbpb (bgi) to ZZZ; level at FL260. Approximate position bgi 345 degree radial at 76 DME. Received TCAS TA. Traffic at 12:30 o'clock position descending. As traffic got closer; I started a left turn (to the west) to avoid conflicting traffic. First officer told ATC that we were in a left turn. ATC came back with; 'turn right 090 degrees.' we again told them we were in a left turn. At this point we received a TA/RA which commanded a 2000 FPM rate of climb. I followed the TCAS command as per operating manual. I climbed to approximately FL266; at which point the 'clear of conflict' audio could be heard. Aircraft was promptly returned to FL260 and course centerline. We believe other aircraft to be a large transport aircraft.
