Narrative:

Engine sputtered and stopped 6-8 miles south of ZZZ airport. Engine was restarted and an immediate straight line toward the numbers at ZZZ airport was initiated. Then engine sputtered again approximately 3 miles southwest of ZZZ. One field was available within gliding distance so a turn toward the east was initiated and an emergency landing was made in this field. No damage was done to any local property excluding a small portion of a barbed wire fence that the airplane rolled through during the ground roll. The police and fire department arrived and an officer handed me the phone to speak with an aviation safety technician who works for the local FSDO; who verbalized to me tht there would be no investigation from the FAA and that the aircraft was 'released' to have maintenance done to it. The aircraft was brought to ZZZ maintenance and is currently there.
