Narrative:

Our route was from west palm beach to ny kennedy in an medium large transport aircraft and our clearance was AR7 to AR3 (EST) which is over water. This was my first trip over water so I checked the operations manual to see if we were legal in this aircraft to fly over water and it stated we were. When we arrived in ny I checked with the dispatcher and he stated that we might have had to leave life vest on board. I think this problem could have been prevented if our operations manual could have been more explicit such as a yes or no.
