Narrative:

On approach we were told to slow to final approach speed and in the process we brought the gear down and we got a gear disagree at the same time we were told to go missed which we needed to anyway to fix the problem. We went through the procedures that led us to pull the gear handle to release the gear. Before we did that we contracted maintenance to let them know we had a gear disagree and that we are going to pull the gear handle and that we would contact them after we pulled it. Good news; gear did come down and we got 3 green but to play it safe we declared an emergency. We reset ourselves to ILS runway 22L because it was the longest runway and when we landed it was normal and the nose steering was working so I pulled off onto the taxiway and stopped. We told ground that everything was good and that we did not need the fire truck. Before I decided to move the plane I called maintenance to confirm all was normal and if it was ok to taxi to the gate. Once at the gate I answered maintenance questions and filled out the logbook.
