Narrative:
Departed runway 9 in eyw. Given a left turn to a heading of 360 degrees. While climbing through 1000 ft AGL given instruction for a rerte when able to copy. After completing the 'after takeoff' checklist asked for the rerte. Was given direct 'kartr' then as filed. Entered 'cartr' in FMS; waited for PF confirmation; then activated. The new waypoint headed us northwest; instead of north. Keywest approach handed us off to ZMA who immediately corrected our direction by issuing a new heading eastbound. A new clearance was issued and the rest of the flight proceeded without event. Changes in-flight plan that involve waypoints -- fixes in close proximity to departing airport should be given on the ground during initial clearance issuance; not during times of high workload or critical phases of flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR CREW DEPARTED EYW AND WAS GIVEN DIRECT KARTR INTERSECTION BUT ENTERED CARTR IN ERROR. CARTR IS NEAR OGDEN; UT WHILE KARTR IS OFF THE FLORIDA WEST COAST.
Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 9 IN EYW. GIVEN A L TURN TO A HDG OF 360 DEGS. WHILE CLBING THROUGH 1000 FT AGL GIVEN INSTRUCTION FOR A RERTE WHEN ABLE TO COPY. AFTER COMPLETING THE 'AFTER TKOF' CHKLIST ASKED FOR THE RERTE. WAS GIVEN DIRECT 'KARTR' THEN AS FILED. ENTERED 'CARTR' IN FMS; WAITED FOR PF CONFIRMATION; THEN ACTIVATED. THE NEW WAYPOINT HEADED US NW; INSTEAD OF N. KEYWEST APCH HANDED US OFF TO ZMA WHO IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED OUR DIRECTION BY ISSUING A NEW HDG EBOUND. A NEW CLRNC WAS ISSUED AND THE REST OF THE FLT PROCEEDED WITHOUT EVENT. CHANGES INFLT PLAN THAT INVOLVE WAYPOINTS -- FIXES IN CLOSE PROX TO DEPARTING ARPT SHOULD BE GIVEN ON THE GND DURING INITIAL CLRNC ISSUANCE; NOT DURING TIMES OF HIGH WORKLOAD OR CRITICAL PHASES OF FLT.
