Narrative:

We planned our performance data for flaps 1 degree instead of our normal flaps 5 degrees. During pushback; the ground crew advised me of a pickup that was driving behind the aircraft while we pushed. The first officer and I were discussing this vehicle while we did the before taxi checklist and I called for flaps 5 degrees instead of flaps 1 degree. We did not catch this error on taxi out until we were taking the runway for takeoff. Bna tower had called out light aircraft traffic on final. As we taxied on the runway; I called for flaps 1 degree and then pushed the power up for takeoff. I should have been more diligent when I called for flaps. I will probably not use any flap setting other than what the performance document recommends. I should have reset the flaps before we got to the runway or cleared the runway to redo the performance data for the proper flap setting.

Title: DISTRACTED BY A VEHICLE DURING PUSHBACK. CAPTAIN OF B737-300 CALLS FOR THE WRONG FLAP SETTING WHEN STARTING TO TAXI. ERROR IS CORRECTED JUST BEFORE TAKE OFF.

Narrative: WE PLANNED OUR PERFORMANCE DATA FOR FLAPS 1 DEG INSTEAD OF OUR NORMAL FLAPS 5 DEGS. DURING PUSHBACK; THE GND CREW ADVISED ME OF A PICKUP THAT WAS DRIVING BEHIND THE ACFT WHILE WE PUSHED. THE FO AND I WERE DISCUSSING THIS VEHICLE WHILE WE DID THE BEFORE TAXI CHKLIST AND I CALLED FOR FLAPS 5 DEGS INSTEAD OF FLAPS 1 DEG. WE DID NOT CATCH THIS ERROR ON TAXI OUT UNTIL WE WERE TAKING THE RWY FOR TKOF. BNA TWR HAD CALLED OUT LIGHT ACFT TFC ON FINAL. AS WE TAXIED ON THE RWY; I CALLED FOR FLAPS 1 DEG AND THEN PUSHED THE PWR UP FOR TKOF. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE DILIGENT WHEN I CALLED FOR FLAPS. I WILL PROBABLY NOT USE ANY FLAP SETTING OTHER THAN WHAT THE PERFORMANCE DOCUMENT RECOMMENDS. I SHOULD HAVE RESET THE FLAPS BEFORE WE GOT TO THE RWY OR CLRED THE RWY TO REDO THE PERFORMANCE DATA FOR THE PROPER FLAP SETTING.
