Narrative:

We were departing from ZZZ. I was the first officer. I called clearance delivery and obtained an IFR clearance. It was given as rav V170 V210; 4000 ft; expect 15 transponder; departure. After reading it back I called back to ask for a fix between V170 and V210. Clearance acknowledged the broken route and changed clearance rav bunts kpne. The IFR departure for obstacle clearance was climb to 2600 ft before turning on course and was reviewed with the captain. I called clearance #1 ready runway 6. We were released. I announced intentions for takeoff on unicom. Airborne; I called center and reported the climb. I called 2600 ft start your turn to the captain. Center said radar contact terrain clearance permitting fly runway heading for the climb. I acknowledged. The captain asked on course. I said no; runway heading now. I was startled by the terrain clearance permitting. Did I miss something on the departure procedure? I took my eyes off the panel completely and turned over the approach plate to re-read the procedure. I was correct; 2600 ft before turning on course both runways. Upon looking back up; we were passing 4800 ft and the captain and both altitude 4K. The captain initiated a descent. Passing through 4500 ft; center said aircraft X level 5000 ft. I said no leveling 4000 ft. Center said 4000 ft was your prior clearance. I said affirmative. The next controller gave us a number to call upon landing. I had thought the autoplt was turned on in the first turn; my distraction to look back at the approach plate caused me not to see the airplane climbing through the assigned altitude. The captain called the telephone number upon landing.

I HAD THOUGHT THE AUTOPLT WAS TURNED ON IN THE FIRST TURN; MY DISTR TO LOOK BACK AT THE APCH PLATE CAUSED ME NOT TO SEE THE AIRPLANE CLBING THROUGH THE ASSIGNED ALT. THE CAPT CALLED THE TELEPHONE NUMBER UPON LNDG.
