Narrative:

We were performing maintenance on aircraft X for routine overnight at the hangar. Pulled aircraft out; got ready to taxi to the gate. Called ground contact. Got taxi instructions from the hangar to taxiway north; taxiway south; runway 22; hold short of runway xyl/xzr. During our taxi; we were cleared to cross runway xyl/xzr. Proceed runway xx to papa. During this time we were doing radio procedures and familiarization. During this time it seemed like it was taking a long time to get to taxiway P and I also noticed that I was having a hard time keeping the aircraft on the centerline of runway xx. Also during this time my mind was flashing back to taxiing the regional jet. At this point I never realized I had crossed the active runway xzr/xyl until attending mechanic #2 said that we were on the national guard side. At that point ATC called and notified us that we had 'passed your turn.' we were redirected to hold short of taxiway C then were directed on taxiway C to cross the runway; join taxiway P and to gate area. After we parked; a ramp person approached the aircraft and instructed me to call ATC. I called and gave them my information. We returned to the maintenance office and I was unable to report it to the supervisor due to him being on the phone; but someone did notify him and he instructed me to fill out a report. Basically fatigue; I would say was the main factor. In the prior 2 days I had gotten very little sleep; probably 3-4 hours a night. Also; I was training mechanic #2 on the radios. Supplemental information from acn 807420: I was riding right seat working the radio. I am still in training phase of taxiing. We were told to taxi on runway xx and I was on a part of the airport I am unfamiliar with. I became disoriented and did not see our turnoff (taxiway P). Was unaware we were crossing runway until 1/2 way across the runway when I saw the runway marker lights. This is when we were contacted by ATC and told of the occurrence. I have only taxied about 10 times. I was tired having worked overtime the day before the occurrence; and that it happened at the end of the shift. I have not been to training on the type of aircraft the occurrence happened on; so I was unfamiliar with the radios/aircraft.

Title: TWO MECHANICS (ONE TAXIING; ONE BEING TRAINED) DESCRIBE HOW FATIGUE AND UNFAMILIARITY LED TO A RUNWAY INCURSION WHILE THEIR TAXIING A SAAB 340B ACFT.

Narrative: WE WERE PERFORMING MAINT ON ACFT X FOR ROUTINE OVERNIGHT AT THE HANGAR. PULLED ACFT OUT; GOT READY TO TAXI TO THE GATE. CALLED GND CONTACT. GOT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE HANGAR TO TXWY N; TXWY S; RWY 22; HOLD SHORT OF RWY XYL/XZR. DURING OUR TAXI; WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY XYL/XZR. PROCEED RWY XX TO PAPA. DURING THIS TIME WE WERE DOING RADIO PROCS AND FAMILIARIZATION. DURING THIS TIME IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS TAKING A LONG TIME TO GET TO TXWY P AND I ALSO NOTICED THAT I WAS HAVING A HARD TIME KEEPING THE ACFT ON THE CTRLINE OF RWY XX. ALSO DURING THIS TIME MY MIND WAS FLASHING BACK TO TAXIING THE REGIONAL JET. AT THIS POINT I NEVER REALIZED I HAD CROSSED THE ACTIVE RWY XZR/XYL UNTIL ATTENDING MECH #2 SAID THAT WE WERE ON THE NATIONAL GUARD SIDE. AT THAT POINT ATC CALLED AND NOTIFIED US THAT WE HAD 'PASSED YOUR TURN.' WE WERE REDIRECTED TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY C THEN WERE DIRECTED ON TXWY C TO CROSS THE RWY; JOIN TXWY P AND TO GATE AREA. AFTER WE PARKED; A RAMP PERSON APCHED THE ACFT AND INSTRUCTED ME TO CALL ATC. I CALLED AND GAVE THEM MY INFO. WE RETURNED TO THE MAINT OFFICE AND I WAS UNABLE TO RPT IT TO THE SUPVR DUE TO HIM BEING ON THE PHONE; BUT SOMEONE DID NOTIFY HIM AND HE INSTRUCTED ME TO FILL OUT A RPT. BASICALLY FATIGUE; I WOULD SAY WAS THE MAIN FACTOR. IN THE PRIOR 2 DAYS I HAD GOTTEN VERY LITTLE SLEEP; PROBABLY 3-4 HRS A NIGHT. ALSO; I WAS TRAINING MECH #2 ON THE RADIOS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 807420: I WAS RIDING R SEAT WORKING THE RADIO. I AM STILL IN TRAINING PHASE OF TAXIING. WE WERE TOLD TO TAXI ON RWY XX AND I WAS ON A PART OF THE ARPT I AM UNFAMILIAR WITH. I BECAME DISORIENTED AND DID NOT SEE OUR TURNOFF (TXWY P). WAS UNAWARE WE WERE XING RWY UNTIL 1/2 WAY ACROSS THE RWY WHEN I SAW THE RWY MARKER LIGHTS. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO TRAINING ON THE TYPE OF ACFT THE OCCURRENCE HAPPENED ON; SO I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE RADIOS/ACFT.
