Narrative:

Maintenance scheduling sent a smoke detector to ZZZ. I installed the smoke detector in the aft cargo; forward position; then signed it off. The smoke detector that was sent to ZZZ by maintenance schedulings request; the part number was wrong; the part number should never have been in our system; because it is not effective to our Q400. When we received the part it was already issued to the aircraft.

Title: MECHANIC REPORTS HE INSTALLED A SMOKE DETECTOR IN THE AFT CARGO; FORWARD POSITION OF A DHC-8-400 ACFT. ALTHOUGH PREVIOUSLY ISSUED TO THE ACFT; THE SAME DETECTOR WAS FOUND LATER TO BE AN INCORRECT PART.

WHEN WE RECEIVED THE PART IT WAS ALREADY ISSUED TO THE ACFT.
