Narrative:

A student and I stopped at santa paula; ca; for fuel. After filling up; we taxied to runway 22. There were 2 aircraft ahead of us; doing a run-up. There is not a normal run-up area for runway 22. Our engine was warm; so I did a partial run-up and checked everything. The 2 other aircraft ahead of us appeared to still be doing a preflight run-up check; so I made a call on the CTAF that we were departing runway 22 for a left downwind departure; and took the runway with about 100 ft of runway behind us; and took off. On the downwind leg departure 4 mi east of the airport; one of the airplanes that had been holding ahead of us; came up beside us off our right wing about 300-400 ft away and flew alongside us for 1 min. I made a right climbing turn to get away from the aircraft. Apparently; the pilot was upset because I took off before them.

Narrative: A STUDENT AND I STOPPED AT SANTA PAULA; CA; FOR FUEL. AFTER FILLING UP; WE TAXIED TO RWY 22. THERE WERE 2 ACFT AHEAD OF US; DOING A RUN-UP. THERE IS NOT A NORMAL RUN-UP AREA FOR RWY 22. OUR ENG WAS WARM; SO I DID A PARTIAL RUN-UP AND CHKED EVERYTHING. THE 2 OTHER ACFT AHEAD OF US APPEARED TO STILL BE DOING A PREFLT RUN-UP CHK; SO I MADE A CALL ON THE CTAF THAT WE WERE DEPARTING RWY 22 FOR A L DOWNWIND DEP; AND TOOK THE RWY WITH ABOUT 100 FT OF RWY BEHIND US; AND TOOK OFF. ON THE DOWNWIND LEG DEP 4 MI E OF THE ARPT; ONE OF THE AIRPLANES THAT HAD BEEN HOLDING AHEAD OF US; CAME UP BESIDE US OFF OUR R WING ABOUT 300-400 FT AWAY AND FLEW ALONGSIDE US FOR 1 MIN. I MADE A R CLBING TURN TO GET AWAY FROM THE ACFT. APPARENTLY; THE PLT WAS UPSET BECAUSE I TOOK OFF BEFORE THEM.
