Narrative:

After leveling off at FL360; power was reduced and the #2 engine subsequently flamed out. We requested and received a descent clearance to FL320. Re-light of the engine was unsuccessful at that altitude since we were well above the recommended air start envelope. We were on a direct clearance to ord and continued to the destination. While en route; we worked with the engineer to troubleshoot the problem and were planning on attempting another start during the descent into ZZZ. This start attempt was also unsuccessful. Landing in ZZZ was uneventful. At this time I realized I had neglected to advise ATC of the engine failure. It should be noted that there was no significant performance decrease due to the fact that we were operating well below our gross takeoff weight and were below our 3 engine service ceiling for our actual weight. In addition; we felt confident that we would be successful in starting the engine in-flight.

Title: DC8 AT FL360 WITH ZID; EXPERIENCED ENG FAILURE; SEVERAL RESTART ATTEMPTS FAILED; FLT CREW ELECTED NOT TO NOTIFY ATC REGARDING ENG FAILURE.

Narrative: AFTER LEVELING OFF AT FL360; PWR WAS REDUCED AND THE #2 ENG SUBSEQUENTLY FLAMED OUT. WE REQUESTED AND RECEIVED A DSCNT CLRNC TO FL320. RE-LIGHT OF THE ENG WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AT THAT ALT SINCE WE WERE WELL ABOVE THE RECOMMENDED AIR START ENVELOPE. WE WERE ON A DIRECT CLRNC TO ORD AND CONTINUED TO THE DEST. WHILE ENRTE; WE WORKED WITH THE ENGINEER TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROB AND WERE PLANNING ON ATTEMPTING ANOTHER START DURING THE DSCNT INTO ZZZ. THIS START ATTEMPT WAS ALSO UNSUCCESSFUL. LNDG IN ZZZ WAS UNEVENTFUL. AT THIS TIME I REALIZED I HAD NEGLECTED TO ADVISE ATC OF THE ENG FAILURE. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE DECREASE DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE OPERATING WELL BELOW OUR GROSS TKOF WT AND WERE BELOW OUR 3 ENG SVC CEILING FOR OUR ACTUAL WT. IN ADDITION; WE FELT CONFIDENT THAT WE WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL IN STARTING THE ENG INFLT.
