Narrative:

We took off on runway 24 at teb; nj airport. We were assigned the teb 5 departure; after takeoff we leveled at 1500 ft MSL and then at 4.0 DME from teb made a turn to heading 280 degrees. ATC asked what heading we were on and replied 280 degrees. Then were asked to turn to a heading of 300 degrees. Then was told on the teb 5 departure we should have turned to a heading of 280 degrees as soon as we reached 1500 ft and not have waited a few seconds. We were not told to contact anyone. And it was a non event; no other aircraft was involved.
