Narrative:

After pushback from gate at ewr; the co-pilot called for taxi. I didn't hear all his transmission; but we were cleared to taxi to runway 22R at taxiway Y via B; right; and hold short of taxiway J. We were at taxiway dk and I taxied out dk when ground told us to reduce thrust and said we had told him we were at rd and that we had taxied the wrong way. The co-pilot said he had told ground that we were 'near' rd. Ground told us that dk is a 'direct access' taxiway and is only for use inbound to a gate. In review; I should have more closely monitored the co-pilot's taxi request as I was saluting the ground crew that had just disconnected the tow bar. I also believe ground should have specified rd in their taxi clearance. Nowhere in our airport diagram does it specify that dk is inbound use only.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter was aware of the proximity of the terminal as the turn was initiated and used idle thrust in the turn. The first officer had requested taxi clearance and stated that they were 'near rd.' ground control did not specify the initial taxiway in the taxi instructions and must have then assumed that taxiway rd would be utilized. The reporter's company pages do not make mention of any restr with regard to taxiway dk; nor does the airport diagram indicate that it should only be used for inbound taxi.

Title: THE INITIAL TXWY UTILIZED BY AN AIR CARRIER FLT CREW FOR OUTBOUND TAXI IS APPARENTLY RESERVED FOR INBOUND TAXI ONLY. THIS RESTR IS NOT SPECIFIED ON THE EWR ARPT DIAGRAM.

Narrative: AFTER PUSHBACK FROM GATE AT EWR; THE CO-PLT CALLED FOR TAXI. I DIDN'T HEAR ALL HIS TRANSMISSION; BUT WE WERE CLEARED TO TAXI TO RWY 22R AT TXWY Y VIA B; R; AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY J. WE WERE AT TXWY DK AND I TAXIED OUT DK WHEN GND TOLD US TO REDUCE THRUST AND SAID WE HAD TOLD HIM WE WERE AT RD AND THAT WE HAD TAXIED THE WRONG WAY. THE CO-PLT SAID HE HAD TOLD GND THAT WE WERE 'NEAR' RD. GND TOLD US THAT DK IS A 'DIRECT ACCESS' TXWY AND IS ONLY FOR USE INBOUND TO A GATE. IN REVIEW; I SHOULD HAVE MORE CLOSELY MONITORED THE CO-PLT'S TAXI REQUEST AS I WAS SALUTING THE GND CREW THAT HAD JUST DISCONNECTED THE TOW BAR. I ALSO BELIEVE GND SHOULD HAVE SPECIFIED RD IN THEIR TAXI CLRNC. NOWHERE IN OUR ARPT DIAGRAM DOES IT SPECIFY THAT DK IS INBOUND USE ONLY.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR WAS AWARE OF THE PROXIMITY OF THE TERMINAL AS THE TURN WAS INITIATED AND USED IDLE THRUST IN THE TURN. THE FO HAD REQUESTED TAXI CLRNC AND STATED THAT THEY WERE 'NEAR RD.' GND CTL DID NOT SPECIFY THE INITIAL TXWY IN THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND MUST HAVE THEN ASSUMED THAT TXWY RD WOULD BE UTILIZED. THE RPTR'S COMPANY PAGES DO NOT MAKE MENTION OF ANY RESTR WITH REGARD TO TXWY DK; NOR DOES THE ARPT DIAGRAM INDICATE THAT IT SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR INBOUND TAXI.
